Main Characters:
Tsunayoshi Sawada
Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada (沢田 綱吉, Sawada Tsunayoshi) is the protagonist of Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Although at first a cowardly and useless junior high student, Tsuna is suddenly thrust into fulfilling the role as the tenth generation Boss of the Vongola Famiglia, the most prominent Mafia Famiglia in the world, forcing him to gather his own Guardians to eventually battle for the survival of the world. His character development from a weak individual who easily gives up to a leader dedicated to and willing to fight for the protection of his friends, family, and Famiglia is a critical element of the series. Although he himself does not wish to have anything to do with the Mafia, he nevertheless finds himself thrust into numerous battles, so far involving escaped Mafia exiles, a rival group of elite assassins within the Vongola, ten years in the future, the Millefiore Famiglia, a rival Famiglia in the process of eliminating the Vongola which ended with Tsuna defeating the rival Famiglia's leader, Byakuran, a battle with the Simon Famiglia, former ally of the Vongola, caused by the first generation Mist Guardian Daemon Spade's meddling, and the Representative Battle of the Rainbow, a battle fought to free one Arcobaleno from their curse, Tsuna fighting for Reborn. At the beginning of the series, Tsuna is a junior-high student known in school as "No Good Tsuna" for his poor grades, wimpy attitude, bad luck, and lack of athleticism, a fact which Tsuna freely admits. Tsuna is generally depicted as comically horrified by the outrageous actions of those around him, generally causing him to become nearly hysterical, especially by Reborn's training methods. His lack of confidence and tremendous lack of luck generally contrast humorously with the positions of leadership and external pressure Reborn puts him in. Despite his title, he seems an earnest individual with great potential; unfortunately, Reborn discovers that often the only way to force Tsuna to fulfill this potential is to put him in a life or death situation. Although told by others that he is to be the 10th generation Vongola Boss, Tsuna is generally unwilling to take part in anything that has to do with the Mafia. He always denies the fact that he is a going to be Mafia Boss and tries to avoid anyone and anything involved with the Mafia, clinging to any element of an ordinary life he can, even stating that his Guardians and subordinates are just his friends and upperclassmen. Later, though he dislikes the violent history inherent in the Mafia, stating that he would rather destroy the Vongola Famiglia then to accept such a heritage, Tsuna is grateful for the friends he has made since meeting Reborn. He cares a lot for his Famiglia and puts himself in the way of danger and even death in order to protect the members. Tsuna's personality has developed greatly since the beginning of the manga, from being a cowardly, useless individual who gave up easily, to an individual of great resolve to do whatever he must do to protect the companions he has made. Later, he is depicted as being comfortable with leadership, as the others in his Famiglia look to him for decisions he dispenses without hesitation. The Tsuna of the future is said to be deceased, having been gunned down; however, not without making arrangements for the future. It is later revealed that the bullet used to gun down Tsuna was just another special bullet (similar to Dying Will Bullet) that replaced the normal bullet in the gun, the deed done by Shoichi Irie. Presumably, the future Tsuna has now settled comfortably into the role of the tenth Vongola Boss. There have been many similarities between Tsuna and founder of the Vongola Famiglia, Giotto, including physical appearance, fighting techniques, and weapons used. Both of their personalities are likely to be very similar as it has been shown that they have similar goals and ways of standards; for example, neither had problems with appointing Guardians from outside the Famiglia or accepting past enemies into their Famiglia.

Hayato Gokudera
Hayato Gokudera was born in Italy and is 3/4 Italian and 1/4 Japanese, having a half-Japanese mother. His all-consuming ambition is to succeed as Tsuna's right-hand man. Despite his rebellious image, Hayato excels in his schoolwork and aces all his tests, often tutoring his less-skilled friends such as Tsuna and Yamamoto. Gokudera also bases a lot of his thinking and academic prowess on mathematical theories that he develops. It is commonly assumed that he had a multitude of private tutors when he was young, as he was brought up in a rich household. Every time he sees the face of his older sister, Bianchi, he becomes sick, sometimes even falling unconscious. Tsuna calls it "Bianchi-phobia." This is due to having to eat her Poison Cooking whenever he had a piano recital, as his playing became terrible and distorted whenever affected by the poison, and was hailed by audiences as "unique", "modern", and "abstract". Oddly enough, he is immune to his sister when she happens to be wearing something that covers part of her face. As a result of his childhood trauma, he abandoned the piano despite his great talent and instead decided to join the Mafia. Unfortunately, since he was considered to be a mere musician, no one wanted to accept him into their family; the fact that he was an oriental half-breed lessened his chances of finding a willing Mafia Family to take him in. To become stronger, he sought advice from Dr. Shamal, who, at the time, was working for his Family. Hayato seemed to have looked up to Shamal, to the point that Shamal believed Hayato to have copied his hairstyle, and even wanted to learn his assassination technique, the Trident Mosquito. Instead, Shamal taught him how to use sticks of dynamite, which sparked Hayato's fascination with explosives, eventually choosing them as his main Weapon. This choice of Weapon lead Gokudera to become known as a human explosive because he hides dynamite all over his body, giving him the nickname "Hurricane Bomb" or "Smoking Bomb" Hayato. In the Future Arc, more was revealed about Gokudera's past. He and Bianchi are actually half siblings, born by different mothers. Bianchi's mother was married to their father, but Gokudera's mother was a woman with whom he had an affair with. Gokudera's mother was a young, beautiful woman and a very talented pianist, whom their father fell in love with at first sight. Not long after, they became involved and the woman bore a child. However, in the Mafia, illegitimate children are not tolerated, and everyone was told that Gokudera Hayato was actually from the same mother as Bianchi. His real mother was allowed to see him three times a year until he was three and was the one who encouraged him to play the piano. Gokudera's mother was not allowed to reveal her identity him, so he thought she was just someone who visted a lot. She suddenly died after driving off a cliff on her way to see her son, with a present for him (the present being why suicide was eliminated as a possible cause of death). When Gokudera was eight, he discovered that the woman that frequently visited him was his mother from servants gossiping, who implied that this matter was arranged by his father; this led him to run away from home. According to Reborn, however, it was neither a suicide or a murder, but "It slid off the road at an impossible location. It's been said that there weren't even tire marks. It was instant death." Future Bianchi made the further claim that Gokudera's parents both loved each other deeply and could have married. Gokudera's mother was actually very sick, and for this reason refused to marry Gokudera's father, believing she would be a burden to him. Bianchi believes that the illness made his mother lose control of the car. Despite several letters being shown as proof, Gokudera refused to give credit to this version of events.

Takeshi Yamamoto
Addressed as "Yamamoto" by almost everyone in the series, this base baller-turned-Mafioso has a warm and friendly personality and is rarely seen not smiling. He is, however, very naïve to the point of believing that Reborn's Weapons are advanced kid's toys and that the mafia business is one big cops-and-robbers game. Yamamoto's portrayal in the story is that of a stereotypical Japanese teenager; his name "Takeshi" and surname "Yamamoto" are both common Japanese names, his looks are quite ordinary for a Japanese teenager, he is a big fan of baseball (a popular sport in Japan), his family owns a sushi store, and later in the story, he uses a katana (a Japanese sword). Future Yamamoto has shown to have learned everything about the Mafia and seems to be okay with it. Yamamoto is the type of character that can make friends with everyone, and if not friendship, then at least respect. Characters like Hibari have been shown to have interest in Yamamoto's battles, and Squalo has also shown to have interest in his development to the point of willingly tutoring him. However, Yamamoto can become angry when his friends are hurt or injured. He is also willing to sacrifice things important to him to save his friends from danger, as shown in the Kokuyo Arc. where he sacrificed an arm (right before an important baseball game) to defeat Ken; and when Squalo asked him whether he would choose baseball or the sword, he chose the sword in order to protect those he cared about. Despite his easy-going personality, Yamamoto has shown that he has hidden talent as a Hitman. In fact, Reborn clearly sees Yamamoto's potential and often mentions to Tsuna that Yamamoto is a natural born Hitman, mentioning as well that he is the best athlete in the entire Vongola Famiglia. His fast reflexes and athletically conditioned-body give him a natural advantage and he is shown to be able to dodge cannon fire and wayward fireworks. Yamamoto is also a quick learner, remembering all 8 forms of the Shigure Soen Ryu despite only being shown once. He also manages to develop a new form of the style, the 9th form, in a life-or-death situation. Future Yamamoto still shows a bit of his easy-going self, but has become more mature and serious. In terms of personality, Yamamoto resembles the first generation rain guardian, Asari Ugetsu, something the latter acknowledges.

Kyoya Hibari
Kyoya Hibari is the leader of the Namimori Middle Discipline Committee, a group of delinquents who are all loyal to Hibari. He is a violent delinquent who uses his status to harass other students. As shown several times in the series, he prefers to be alone and cares little for his subordinates. He loves Namimori more than anything and will often say "I'll bite you to death," or "kamikorosu," to those that disturb Namimori Middle School. Hibari is very proud of his school and is apparently the only person who likes their school's anthem, even using it as his ringtone. In the Kokuyo Arc, he adopts the Kokuyo Assassin Birds' bird. The bird (subsequently nicknamed "Hibird" due to its connection to Hibari) becomes attached to Hibari. Hibird can also sing the school's anthem as Hibari loves it. Reborn piqued Hibari's curiosity early on in the series and Hibari considers him a worthy opponent, having a strong urge to fight him. As stated by others, Hibari is a very scary character with no care in the well beings of others, preferring to do whatever it takes to get what he wants. This often leads his opponents to surprise him, as he doesn't think before attacking. As the head of Namimori Middle's Discipline Committee, Hibari uses authority to assault those that get on his nerves, including his own subordinates. A rare trait about him is his love for small animals, ranging from birds to hedgehogs. He is also fiercely loyal to his school and its rules, going so far as to punish others for breaking them even if they aren't students or at the school, such as Genkishi. He is shown to dislike being indebt to anyone and strives to pay them back as soon as possible. Also, earlier in the series he is also shown to have a soft spot for I-Pin, having accepted her Valentines day chocolates with a smile and not taking money from Tsuna at a festival upon seeing I-Pin worried. Future Hibari is shown to be more calm and observant about his opponents, and outwardly admits to hating illusionists because of his grudge towards Mukuro, the first person to have defeated him. His desire to be alone and attack people that annoy him still remains, though his actions are shown with more thought. Future Hibari is also seen being more respectful to Future Tsuna, showing that he has accepted him as his boss (as seen in one of the flashbacks of Irie Shoichi). As stated by others, Hibari Kyoya (in terms of personality) resembles the first generation cloud guardian, Alaude.

Ryohei Sasagawa
Ryohei Sasagawa is Kyoko's older brother who is obsessed with boxing. His motto is to live "to the extreme!", which he applies to everything he does. As such, he prefers to fight his opponents head on, seeing any disadvantage as a chance to improve his fighting skills. He even barged into a zoo, expecting to fight a bear, but ended up fighting a lion instead. Every time he sees Tsuna and his friends doing something strange, he gets riled up and wants to be a part of it. Due to Ryohei's enthusiasm, he often rushes into things without fully evaluating the situation, which often results in his injury. He also has a short memory and forgets many important details, something his future-self overcame by writing memos. Ryohei is always hiding the truth of his actions -the actions relating to the Mafia- from Kyoko, due to an incident that had happened while they were in primary school. Some high school students who did not like Ryohei used Kyoko to lure him into a trap. In his attempt to rescue her, he suffered severe injuries, which resulted in the scar on his left temple. Kyoko still feels responsible for this incident, though she accepts that he needs to fight. He is deeply concerned for Kyoko's safety, so he covers up his actual life-or-death battles with the cover story of "Sumo matches". He is known to have great boxing skills in the Vongola Famiglia.

Lambo
Lambo is a 5 year old hitman who originally came to Japan with the intent of killing Reborn. He is a spoiled and cowardly brat who takes candy from everyone; it has said that he never brushes his teeth. Lambo is the youngest guardian and each Famiglia member takes turns caring for him, with the exceptions of Gokudera and Reborn who consider him to be overly annoying and stupid, refering to him as stupid cow. He was previously a Bovino Famiglia mafioso (Bovino meaning cattle) and is currently the 10th generation Lightning Vongola Guardian(Vongola meaning clam in Italian). He thinks of himself as a good hitman, refers to himself in third person, referring to himself as "Lambo-san." Lambo is considered annoying by most of the people he meets, but by his fellow Guardians, he is also considered as someone dear to them. He is shown to be very self-confident and views himself with high regards, but he often ends up crying over small things. 15 years old Lambo is still the crybaby he was when he was younger, but can become determined to face his fears for his friends and loved ones, similar to how 5 years old Lambo had recenetly been shown capable of doing, though only for the sake of being with Tsuna's mother, Nana. In his brief appearance, 25 years old Lambo is shown to be more serious, unwilling to cry upon seeing the faces he had not seen in a long time. Both 5 year old and 15 year old Lambo have been shown to resemble the first generation Lightning Guardian, Lampo, in terms of personality, but the two show little respect for each other.

Mukuro Rokudo
Mukuro Rokudo is the first arc's primary villain. Later on, he becomes Tsuna's Mist Guardian. Portrayed as the series' first primary antagonist, Mukuro Rokudo is introduced as a 15-year-old Mafia criminal wearing a Kokuyo school uniform with a so-called "pineapple" hairstyle. He is the leader of the Kokuyo Gang, which consists of heinous criminals who have recently escaped from the Vendicare Prison. However, later on in the series, he takes on a more supportive role for the series' main characters, becoming somewhat of an ally rather than an enemy, though he prefers to not consider himself as one of their allies and avoids any involvement with the Mafia due to his past.As revealed in a flashback sequence, Mukuro Rokudo was taken into the Estraneo Famiglia and was one of the children experimented on by the Estraneos. One day, Mukuro killed his captors with his abilities and offered Chikusa Kakimoto and Ken Joshima, two children who were also experimented on, a chance to join him in his new quest to destroy the "insignificant" world. Later on, Mukuro was adopted into a Mafia Famiglia in Northern Italy. However, unbeknownst to the Famiglia, Mukuro was periodically controlling one of its Members, Lancia, and using him to kill others, eventually making him kill his own Famiglia and several Mafia Famiglias in Northern Italy. Since then, Mukuro had Lancia under his complete control, using him as a "Fake Mukuro" who is eventually mistakenly identified as the real Mukuro in a picture, whereas the real Mukuro is said to have never been photographed, although on two occasions, the real Mukuro has been shown to have been photographed. Anything else Mukuro did in recent years remains a mystery, but it is mentioned that he, along with Ken and Chikusa, had been locked up in a high security Italian prison, which is reserved for the most dangerous of Mafia criminals who have even committed crimes against the Mafia itself. Two weeks prior to the Kokuyo Gang's appearance in the story, they staged a jailbreak on the eve of Mukuro's execution, resulting in the death of several wardens and prisoners, and later the escape of other dangerous criminals. Afterwards, they attended Kokuyo Junior High, and in a short time were able to take over control of the whole school. Mukuro is a fairly-tall teenager with blue hair in a so-called pineapple style. His left eye is blue and his right eye is red (normally shown with the number 'six' in the middle). In the manga, he also wears earrings, while he doesn't in the anime. When he was a member of Estraneo Famiglia at a young age, he was shown to be wearing a plain white T-shirt, short pants, and no shoes. He also had shorter hair and a bruise around his right eye, indicating he had surgery. During most of his appearances, Mukuro wears the green Kokuyo school uniform with the buttons of the jacket undone, revealing a shirt with a misty design (shown to be a short-sleeved shirt in an ending). During his fight with Mammon, he wore a different outfit. Like in his intial appearance, Mukuro wore gloves, but also had a dark green jacket, trousers, and a darker-colored shirt. Ten years later, Mukuro's hair is longer and is tied up at the back, similar to Ricardo. From his first appearance to the end of Choice, he wore a black jacket, a white T-shirt, a black necktie and black trousers with boots, including two white belts. After being freed from the Vendicare Prison, he wore a shorter jacket, a shirt with buttons, white trousers and tall black boots. When he was called out by Daemon during the battle with the Simon Famiglia, Mukuro appeared wearing his former T-shirt, a jacket similar to the one he wore during the Mist Ring Battle, a pair of (possibly white) trousers and long black boots. After being forced to possess Mukurou, the Vongola Owl, Mukuro has made no changes to the owl's appearance besides its right eye and a zig-zag pattern same as his own on top of its head. Despite often being shown with a playful smile, Mukuro is seemingly apathetic to the suffering of others. Appearing as the series' first antagonist, Mukuro is not averse to disposing of those who get in his way and is not easily intimidated, usually speaking to others in a very direct and arrogant manner. He cares little for others, and simply considers people to be "toys" or "tools" he can sacrifice in order to get what he wants. However, despite claiming that people are just toys, he seems to tolerate both Ken and Chikusa, and even protects them when need be, though he does not directly do so in front of them. He later sacrifices himself in order for Ken and Chikusa to safely escape from the Vendicare, and he also agrees to be the Guardian of the Mist in exchange for the two's safety. Mukuro, along with Ken and Chikusa, has a great hatred for the entire Mafia underground, possibly due in part to the experimentations they suffered as children. However, not only does he have the desire to destroy the entire Mafia, he also wants to invoke world suffering by starting a world war, claiming to want to cleanse the world with darkness. Even after becoming the Mist Guardian, Mukuro still claims to no longer be part of the Mafia, having been exiled from it, and continues to view the organization with great contempt, though he now prefers to avoid any involvement with them. Mukuro is also quite knowledgeable of the Mafia's dark secrets, possibly even the secret behind the Arcobaleno. However, despite his usual calm demeneaor, he is easy to anger, mostly whenever his hair is compared to a pineapple, which he would immediately attempt to give the offender a punishment, both ruthlessly and comically. So far, only Ken and Flan have said such a taboo.
Nagi, now known as Chrome Dokuro, is a 13-year-old Japanese girl who was first introduced as Tsuna's mysterious Mist Guardian and one of Mukuro's subordinates who acted as his vessel and connection to the world outside Vendicare Prison.Chrome is a girl with short purple pineapple hair like Mukuro with a single violet eye. She's mostly seen wearing a green Kokuyo Middle-school uniform like the rest of Kokuyo Gang, a black eye patch, a black belt, and boots that all have a chrome-colored skull on them, reflecting her own name, Chrome. She always carries her bag, which is where she puts her trident in.Aside from her usual appearance, so far she's shown wearing black suit with black short skirt with longer black boots at Choice Game and Tsuna's Inheritance Ceremony. Recently, she's wearing black Simon Middle School uniform and Namimori-middle uniform. When in an illusionary world, she has longer hair with her bangs covering her lost right eye, and always shown wearing a plain white gown (anime only). In one of manga chapters covers, she's shown wearing a sailor uniform. However, her appearance before she was in her fatal car accident as Nagi was not seen. She never opens up to anyone except Mukuro because she had a completely anti-social life before she met Mukuro. She gets confused and shy when someone is kind to her since she had never imagined that her existence could be accepted by people. Because of her nature, some people can't be honest with her or think of her as pitiful. She tends to lean on Mukuro for help; however, in the Future Arc, she becomes determined to get stronger to help the people who are dear to her and slowly starts to interact with the others. She seems to like skulls since her boots, belt, eye patch, and even her wallet has a skull picture on it.From what her parents talked about in a flashback, her original name was Nagi, and she lived an isolated and antisocial life. After trying to rescue a cat, she was badly injured in a car accident, which led to the loss of her right eye and some of her internal organs. The only way to save her life would be to have someone with the same blood type transfer their organs to her. She did not care whether she lived or not, and her mother refused to sacrifice her own organs anyway. However, Mukuro Rokudo heard her words and allowed her to live by creating Illusionary organs. However, if hers or Mukuro's Trident breaks, her stomach will sink in due to not having genuine organs. Chrome has been shown using two of Mukuro's six Skills. She is also trying hard to learn Italian, since her goal is to someday be able to converse with Mukuro in Italian.
Reborn is the infant home tutor of Tsunayoshi Sawada and the world's strongest hitman. Whenever he greets someone, he says "Ciaossu," a casual greeting of Japanese and Italian that combines Ciao and Ossu. He wears a black fedora with a thick orange stripe running across the sides of the cone. He has black eyes and wears an all-black suit with black boots and a red long sleeved polo with a blue necktie underneath. His adult form, however, wears a yellow long sleeved polo. Reborn has also worn many various costumes that vary in design and creativity. He is always seen with his pet chameleon Leon on the brim of his hat along with his Sun Arcobaleno Pacifier. Among all the Arcobaleno, he is said to be the strongest. It was revealed in a flashback that Reborn initially showed anger towards the Arcobaleno curse; however, after a period of exile, he came to accept it, asking Shamal to "erase" his old self. As an Arcobaleno, he remains fairly calm through any situation, even in his "fights" against Colonnello. He did, however, admit to have snapped when Timoteo was revealed to be in Gola Mosca during the Varia Arc.
